Some of the more experienced singers were able to practice conducting, and took it in turns to conduct in the final Mass of the weekend.

The Gregorian Chant Network's annual Chant Training Weekend will take place in the Oratory School, near Reading, 6-8th April.

There is a change of tutors to announce: sadly Fr Guy Nichols, who was one of the two tutors last year, can't make it. Instead we will be joined by Matthew Ward, who is Director of Music at Mayfield School.

Full details of the course, and booking, is here.

Belgium chant festical, 9-13th May

Discover the program and the brand new website of the International Gregorian Festival of Watou 2018 (Belgium)
Dear,
Four hundred fresh, young and for the greater part professionally trained voices revive centuries-old music and texts grandiosely during the International Gregorian Festival of Watou, Belgium.
It is going to be a sparkling and universal event in which 27 scholas and top ensembles from every corner in the world, from Columbia to Australia will take part. Vocal virtuosity is trumps. A large number of participating scholas are professional or semi-professional , which stands for the highest quality level and renewed radiation. Five youth choirs will create an atmosphere of admiration and tenderness.
The Gregorian Festival, organized every three years, evolved in the course of the years to the most important festival in the world for this kind of music. It enjoys an international reputation, and is a unique event.
The central program takes place at Watou, from Wednesday 9 tot Sunday 13 May 2018. The pre-ouvertures at Houtkerque (France), Grimbergen, Poperinge, Koksijde, Antwerp, Brussels, Dunkirk (France), Wervik and Haringhe provide a substantial foretaste from Friday 4th May onwards.
Encounter, heartiness and an atmosphere of happiness and friendship form a harmonious unity during this ten day long festival, together with the heavenly voices, the musicality and the breathtaking mysticism, so typical of Gregorian chant.
With a lot of pride and enthusiasm, we are delighted to show you our completely redesigned website: www.festivalwatou.be. We opted for a contemporary design (available in three languages), where all information about the Festival can be found.

Early Polyphony Study Day in Oxford, 20th Jan

PMMS Study Day
Polyphonic Music of the Late Middle Ages from England and the Continent. Sources, Context and Court Culture

Magdalen College, Oxford - Saturday, 20th January 2018

The 2018 PMMS study day accompanies the exhibition “Fragments of note: the afterlives of medieval manuscripts” at Magdalen College, Oxford, which examines the numerous medieval manuscript fragments held at Magdalen, largely medieval books that have been dismantled in the early modern period and re-used as binding waste or covers. The main exhibition focuses on fragments featuring musical notation and is complemented by a selection of contemporary watercolour, collage, and paper-pulp relief works by fine artist Janet Boulton.
